For a long time, public figures were made through Hollywood. They’d take years to establish themselves in movies and TV and finally break out. These days, stars can be made in a matter of days, especially on platforms like TikTok.

But even if you’re not trying to become the next Charli D’Amelio, it’s worth figuring out how to get verified on TikTok. After all, the social media network has about 1 billion active users a month.

Why get verified on TikTok?

In short, getting verified on TikTok can help establish any kind of brand you wish. It can also further your career, whether you’re a musician, actor, writer, or even a business owner. But here’s a more detailed breakdown into why getting verified is worth it.

Authenticity

You know how there are always social media accounts pretending to be NBA insiders on trade deadline day? With that check mark comes credibility. Users know you are who you say are.

Exposure

There’s a rumour that, thanks to TikTok’s algorithms, verified accounts show up more often and get more likes. Those likes could potentially lead to more followers.

Trustworthiness

Verified accounts often interact with other verified accounts. Being verified means your favourite celebrities or influencers on the app may actually respond to your comments and DMs — or even your requests for business partnerships.

How many followers do you need to get verified on TikTok?

This isn’t Fight Club, where everyone knows the rules. TikTok’s verification process isn’t quite as clear. There are no direct thresholds to hit to get automatically verified. Some TikTok accounts have hundreds of thousands of followers but no checkmark.

Instead, TikTok uses its own secret system of verification. Basically, staff seek out and give checkmarks to reward users for high quality, popular content. But there are some data points TikTok looks for that can help your case.

Of course, you can bypass all that and just….be super famous. There are verified celebrities on the platform with zero posts (*ahem* Tom Cruise).

How to get verified on TikTok

Other than being Jack Black or Justin Bieber (or another famous person with the initials J.B.), there aren’t many shortcuts to getting verified on TikTok. (And no, you can’t pay to make it happen. Beware of scammers!) But here are some tips and tricks that will help you get noticed by TikTok staff who hand out the coveted checkmark.

Step 1: Find your niche and keep producing

Establishing any brand takes popular and authentic content on a daily basis. Once you become known for something, it will be easy to attract, keep and grow your following. That’s why it’s important to start developing catchy, engaging material and keep your foot on the pedal.

It helps to keep up with TikTok’s challenges and the hashtags related to them. It’s a proven fact that TikTok users like brands that participate in TikTok trends.

And because music is one of the most important factors on TikTok, you’ll want to keep up with the songs and artists that are trending on the platform. Including those in your videos can be an easy way to capitalize on their popularity.

You’ll also want to do some research on your own videos. This can help measure the impact of your content and show you what posting times give you the best results.

Step 2: Get featured in the media

It turns out that traditional star-making platforms are still relevant! Who knew?

But it’s not just traditional forms either. Yes, it definitely helps to get featured in a magazine or a newspaper, or on the television and radio. But appearing in online posts, YouTube clips and on podcasts with other highly regarded creators is also a great way to spread your message.

TikTok star Lubalin probably got a lot more followers after his interview with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, for example.

And guess what? All those places are looking for content too. You just have to give them a reason to want to feature you. It helps to follow relevant newsworthy or trending topics. If others think you have something important, funny or interesting to say about the news of the day, it increases your chances of being featured.

Step 3: Become verified on another social media platform

Social media networks like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram let you apply for verification. That doesn’t mean it’s necessarily easier to get verified, but it is a little more straightforward.

Each one of those sites will have their own set of qualities that they’re looking for users to meet in order to be verified:

  • Facebook likes to verify accounts that are professional, official representations of a brand.
  • Twitter recently announced new criteria for verification. Under the new rules, accounts must fall under one of six different categories. Twitter has also said that it will open up the rules in 2022.
  • Instagram is a tough nut to crack. Essentially, it will only verify accounts that have a good chance of being impersonated.

Getting a checkmark on any of these sites will go a long way to getting verified on TikTok. That’s because it lets TikTok know that you’re a person with real cachet on the internet. And you can connect those accounts to your TikTok account.

So get those verification processes rolling!

Step 4: Go viral

This one might seem kind of obvious. But most TikTik accounts have at least one major viral explosion before verification. Getting on the site’s “For You” page can be a major boost to your followers and viewers, and will put you on TikTok’s radar.

High activity and engagement are two of the key metrics that TikTok looks for when verifying accounts. Going viral checks those boxes nicely.

While there isn’t a scientific formula for going viral on TikTok, there are some ways you can help your case. Here are a few paths to do that:

  • Start the video off in a catchy way. Things happen quickly on TikTok. You have to make sure your video is attention-grabbing in the first couple of seconds. Or users will just scroll away. This TikTok user’s video about friends’ reactions to your ex opens in a super catchy way right away.

  • Tell a story. Not everyone is a dancer. Those who can effectively get their point across in a funny or poignant way have an advantage. But..
  • Keep videos as short as possible. TikTok looks at the average length of watch time when evaluating quality. Viewers are more likely to watch the entirety of an 8-to-10 second piece than a one-minute video. This perfect video by Mayim Bialik features a sugar glider and is only 12 seconds long.

  • Reply to the comments. This can help you engage with potential followers and make sure more people see your video. You should be trying to create a community with every post.

Step 5: Follow the rules

Like any social media platform, TikTok will look to verify accounts that follow its community guidelines and terms of service. If you violate those rules, your account will be flagged by moderators and this has a good chance of hurting your chances of being verified.

One last tip

Even though it sounds counterintuitive, don’t get too focused on verification. If you follow the steps and hit the marks above in a natural, authentic way, you’ll get there. Just don’t forget to have fun too.
